#EV Know-How: EVs in vehicle workshops

Our new series brings the workshop together with EVs. Let’s tackle the challenges of the growing number of EVs – together! There’s a LOT to discover!

#EV Know-How is the title of a new series here in the Continental Aftermarket Magazine. The topic is “highly charged” – in the truest sense of the word – because it’s all about EVs (electric vehicles) and how workshops can best adapt to servicing them. #EV Know-How is a must for all service companies that want to pick up speed fast in the EV business, and for those who still haven’t got their business surfboards onto the e-wave and want to learn more.

The future belongs to EVs. However, it will be a long time before EVs and charging stations are everywhere on our streets. No, it won’t! Even though EVs and plug-in hybrids currently account for only a little more than one percent of the total vehicles on Germany’s roads: their numbers will grow rapidly – along with the need for repair, inspection and maintenance.

The e-wave is coming –

because the statistics show that the number of EVs on the roads is rapidly gaining momentum. At the beginning of 2019 there were around 150,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids – but only two years later that number had increased to 600,000, and by the end of 2021, there were almost 900,000 EVs on the roads. By 2030, experts are sure that more than 11 million registered EVs and plug-ins will be on our highways and byways. In 2021, the number of newly registered EVs (13.6%) and hybrids (28.8%) combined was higher than that of newly registered gasoline vehicles (37.1% Here’s another interesting comparison that illustrates the dynamic trend to EVs in Europe: In 2020, more EVs were registered in Europe than in China – for the first time ever. So it’s crystal clear that workshops just can’t wish away EVs in the long term.

Who offers services for EVs?

Drivers of EVs will have to deal with this question at the latest when warranties, guarantees and service contracts with manufacturers or authorized dealers have expired. Workshops that have prepared for the approaching EV wave in good time can proudly shout loud and clear “We can service EVs!” In any case, workshop bosses would do well to start thinking today about just how important EVs and the associated work on high-voltage systems will very soon become for them. #EV Know-How means that even if it takes some effort at first, it will be financially rewarding for workshops to learn all about the EV business.

Workshops: No fear of warranty periods for high-voltage batteries

But what about the warranty and guarantee for the high-voltage batteries and related components in EVs? Many manufacturers give EV buyers a warranty for eight years or the first 160,000 kilometers. So does this mean that servicing these components is reserved for authorized workshops? No! The guarantee remains in force as long as maintenance and inspection are performed according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This opens up an excellent opportunity for independent workshops!
